The Maldives is not a destination, it is a shortlist of 1,200 islands arranged into atolls. The question is never 'Maldives or not' — it is 'which atoll'. Three rules of thumb from 20 years of bookings.
North Malé and South Malé atolls: closest to the airport, shortest speedboat transfers, widest resort selection. Good for short breaks and first-timers. The water is less clear than further south but the convenience is real.
South Ari atoll: manta rays and whale sharks almost year-round. Resorts like Conrad Rangali or Lily Beach are a 25-minute seaplane from Malé. Honeymooners' favourite, with reason. Baa atoll is the UNESCO biosphere — Hanifaru Bay between June and November has the manta ray aggregations that documentaries are made of.
What nobody tells you: budget for the seaplane. A seaplane transfer costs $600-900 per head, which surprises travellers who saw the $800/night resort deal on Booking.com. Plan for it. And always ask about the house reef — the best Maldives memories are made snorkelling off your own villa deck, not on the boat excursion.
