The Dal Lake shikara at 6:30am is one of the quiet legends of Indian travel. The water is still, the light is pink, and the floating vegetable market drifts past on its way to work. You will not get this picture at 10am.
Two practical notes: leave from Ghat No. 15 (behind Shalimar Bagh), not from the main Boulevard — less tourist traffic, better views of the Hari Parbat fort. Expect to pay ₹800-1,200 for a 90-minute ride; anything under ₹600 and you will get rushed.
The floating gardens — radhu — are the part most travellers miss. They are best seen from the eastern side of the lake, near Rainawari. Your shikara-wallah will know. Breakfast afterwards at Ahdoos, kahwa with kulcha, and you will have earned the rest of your day.
