We get asked this question more than any other: Santorini or Maldives. Here is the honest answer from having planned both for hundreds of couples over twenty years.
Maldives wins if: your honeymoon is a reset. You want to do nothing, you want the ocean to be your whole world, you want to be served without being performed at. The overwater villa is the experience. The snorkelling is the memory. The food gets repetitive after five days — so pick a resort with multiple restaurants and consider a 4-night stay, not 7. Budget: ₹3.5–8 lakh per couple depending on resort (Conrad Rangali, Soneva Jani, Cheval Blanc Randheli are our three).
Santorini wins if: your honeymoon is an adventure. You want to walk, explore, eat cliffside, take ferries, spend a day on a catamaran. The caldera views are breath-stopping, the sunsets at Oia are everything the photographs promise, and Greek food is — honestly — better than almost anything in Maldives. Budget: ₹2.8–5 lakh per couple for 6 nights, including flights to Athens via a one-stop connection. Combine with 3 nights in Athens or Mykonos and you have a full holiday.
The tiebreaker: if you are beach people and honeymoon-shy of activity, Maldives. If you like walking, eating, and photography, Santorini. Either way, book 4-5 months ahead — these villas sell out well before the month you want them in.
