Hong Kong is one of the most efficient family holidays in Asia — two world-class parks, a harbour that entertains for free, and the best dim sum on the planet, all within 90 minutes of each other. Here is our tested five-day plan.
Day 1: arrival + rest. Kowloon hotel, Temple Street night market at 7pm, noodles at Kau Kee (the Michelin-listed beef brisket) that the kids will inhale.
Day 2: Hong Kong Disneyland. Opening hour, Mystic Manor is the must-do, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars for 7+, Toy Story Land for toddlers. Leave by 6pm — trust us. The nighttime parade is magical but the MTR is a nightmare after fireworks.
Day 3: Ocean Park. This is the sleeper hit — the panda exhibit, the Grand Aquarium, the cable car with a bay view. The roller-coasters are for 10+ but there is plenty for the younger ones. Snack break at the summit is a sit-down noodle bar with views.
Day 4: the relaxed day. Star Ferry ride, Peak Tram to Victoria Peak (best in morning), a leisurely dim sum lunch at City Hall Maxim's (where locals actually eat), an afternoon swim at the hotel.
Day 5: Lantau. Ngong Ping 360 cable car up, the Big Buddha and a vegetarian lunch at the monastery, back down for a last-day shop at Citygate Outlets. Flight home that night, kids asleep by take-off.
