The Mount Batur sunrise trek is one of Bali's most-sold experiences. It is also one of the most-refunded. Here is our honest brief, from having sent 300+ travellers up the volcano.
You wake at 2am. You drive for 90 minutes. You climb 1,717m in the dark, in a group of 40. You reach the summit at 5:30am, shivering. Clouds block the sunrise maybe one in three mornings. You climb down, eat a mediocre breakfast, drive two more hours, and arrive back at your villa at 11am — exhausted, and with the rest of the day ruined for anything but a nap.
Worth it if: you are under 35, fit, have a spare day, and the forecast is clear. Not worth it if: it is rainy season (November-March), you have bad knees, or you are honeymooning (romance does not survive 2am alarms). Our alternative — the Campuhan Ridge walk at 6am in Ubud, a long breakfast at Room4Dessert, and your dignity intact.
